Fort Hays State University High School Art Days

Rural Vista Student Capture "Awards of Excellence"

By Beth DeMont

April 20, 2007

On Wednesday, April 18, Rural Vista Schools competed in the annual Fort Hays State University High School Art Days.  There were 52 schools in attendance and approximately 2,000 people viewed the exhibits in the show.  Exhibits were displayed in Gross Memorial Coliseum and the entire building was used for the display.  It was really fantastic!

The students upon arrival set up their own display section for judging.  After setting up, we had the opportunity to view all of the different artworks from all of the schools.  It was really astounding to see that much artwork at one time and to see all of the different varieties of creativity.    Mrs. DeMont, district art teacher, said, "I love to take students to Hays because they get the opportunity to see what other schools are doing in their classroom, this allows for new creative ideas."  Schools from all over Kansas attended, some leaving at 3:30 in the morning in order to arrive in time for setup.

The judges were from the University and included Professors Thorn, Kuchar, and Jilg.  The criteria for judging is that the pieces receiving the "Certificate of Excellence" must be representative of college-level work.

After viewing and judging were completed, the artwork was taken down, packed up, and we headed back to our respective schools.

White City students receiving Award of Excellence were:
