VisionScreening

We interviewed Nurse Kathy Hubka from White City School about the recent school-wide vision screening. First, we asked Nurse Kathy about the purpose of the vision screening.  She told us that the purpose is to catch eye problems like pink eye and conjunctivitis.  It’s also meant to determine vision acuity and whether the student has a lazy eye. If the student has any vision problems, forms will be sent out to the parents. Next, we asked her how the screenings were done, and she said that there were letters on the wall to test vision acuity. They take pictures of the student’s eyes to see if the eyes are strong and healthy. There is a test where they slowly move a light toward the nose and their eyes should move together. This test is called “Point of Convergence.”  A pair of people from the Manhattan Lion Club have been volunteering for 3 years to help with the vision screening. We asked how often they do vision screenings, and Nurse Kathy said that by state law every new student has to get a vision screening.  Other students have to get their vision checked every 2 years.
