MobileLab

Don’t come to Science!  Science comes to you!  On November 2nd, students were given the opportunity to explore the KDHE (The Kansas Department of Health and Environment) Mobile Lab. This was a fun opportunity for a hands-on science experience.  Students first had to extract strawberry DNA.  They crushed strawberries, added soap and salt, then put both in a cup. Afterwards, they put alcohol in the mix in order to have the DNA rise, and then swabbed it with a Q-Tip. After that, students took some “virus balls,” (squishy rubber balls) and threw them into holes in order to show how difficult it would be for viruses to make it through all the steps of hygiene. It’s a fun way to teach about the importance of hygiene. The students wadded up paper, then uncrumple it to make a “mountain in a container.”  They then poured water on top of the paper, and let the water run through, to show the flow of major water streams. Finally students walked outside and looked around the inside of the van, while guides explained the uses of the van.  The van is the actual Mobile Lab that is used for a lab on the go.
