Earth Day is observed on April 22nd in the United States. The day is marked out for giving attention to the importance of environmental action. For example, the benefits of recycling and the harms of pollution are considered. The first Earth Day was in 1970. The observance came out of the increasing environmental movement of the time period. This movement eventually got the Clean Air Act of 1970 passed. Earth Day truly went international in 1990, when Denis Hayes organized a day observed in more than 140 countries. Today, popular Earth Day topics include global warming and renewable energy.
Last Monday was Earth Day once again. White City School wanted to take part in the activities of the day. Each class had a different role to play in the day’s work. The preschool picked up trash on the playground. 3rd and 4th grade cleaned up around the school. 5th and 6th picked up trash at the park. Ms. Fiest’s class planted flowers and picked up trash on Main Street. Mr. Killmon’s 10th grade and Mr. Daggett’s 11th grade classes went over to the ballfield to pick up trash and scrape off peeling paint. Miss O’s Ag. Class cleaned up the bus barn.
"We enjoyed cleaning up our community,” Kaimey Evans said. Thanks to Kaimey, and all the other students, who clearly demonstrated their commitment to the quality of our natural environment.
