On May 1, White City girls in grades 6-8 took a field trip to Salina in order to explore careers that are historically nontraditional for women. For these young students, it was a chance to investigate possible futures.
Everyone was handed pictures with jobs, and the job indicated what table you sat at. From 8:45 to 9:00, students had donuts and an introductory activity. From 9:00 to 9:10, students had their first panel.
There were 3 panels and each panel was led by two women. For the first panel students talked to Isabel Baringer and Captain Rachel Larson. They told us what job they do and about their job. Larson is in the Police Department and Baringer is a firefighter.
The hour between 9:50 to 10:50 consisted of rotations 1 and 2. There are 4 different groups that went to their rotations. The rotations were “Paper Airplane Contest,” “Engineering Challenge,” “Teambuilding,” and “Welding Dept.” From 11 to 11:40, we had our second panel. Students talked to Libby Lorenson and Dr. Annie Hiekman. Lorenson is a mechanical engineer and Hiekman is a teacher. 11:40 to 12:25 consisted of a complimentary lunch. The school provided pizza, chips, soda and ice cream.
Between 12:25 to 12:45, there was a guest presentation. The guest was Kristine Larson Davis, who is a space suit engineer. Between 1:55 to 2:35, students had their third panel. We talked to Dr. Katherine Bruns and Dr. Bridget Byquist. Bruns works with eyes, and Byquist works with medicine.
